| Kay Sayles enlisted in April 1942 and after initial training at Innsworth - Gosport
and St Athan she was posted to 51 M.U Lichfield as an F.M.E (Flight
Mechanic Engines). She worked on many different types of aircraft
including Wellingtons, Beaufighters, Liberators, Typhoons, Hurricanes and
Spitfires. Demobbed in April 1946 she returned to help in the running of
the family building business but has always kept in touch with the many
friends she made at Lichfield particularly Australian aircrew who went
through 27 O.T.U. She has played an active role in the W.A.A.F. and RAF Lichfield
Association's also raising considerable sums of money for charitable causes. In June 2002
she was awarded the M.B.E receiving it from the Queen in December - the
role of women in the war effort particularly in technical trades has been
much underestimated and it is a fitting tribute that she should receive
this award.
