On the 30th May 1942 Manchester 1 L7301 of 50 Sqdn took off at 2301 hrs from Skellingthorpe for an Ops Mission to Cologne. Whilst over the target the aircraft was hit by heavy flak and severely damaged and F/O Manser the Pilot struggled to control the aircraft to reach safer territory before ordering the six crew to bale out. Whilst the Crew were in the parachute descent they saw the aircraft crash in flames at Bree 21 km NNE of Genk Belgium. One crew member became a POW and the other five evaded capture and it was their testimonies that were instrumental in the posthumous award of the VC to F/O Manser.
